Steward Street
In 1992, I wrote a play for Big Brum, based on a great deal of research into the story of Steward Street School in the 1940s. A primary school in the slums of Ladywood, in 1941 it started a remarkable experiment, placing arts at the centre of the curriculum. In 2025 I am starting a new project in collaboration with Raddlebarn School, where I started in 2024 as writer-in-residence. We will be recreating the story of Steward Street, this time with children playing the part of the children. With three professional performers working alongside the pupils, we will be creating a podcast version of this inspiring and increasingly urgent story.
